Liverpool, England.
McCartney met John Lennon
and joined Lennon's band, the Quarrymen. The group became the Beatles.
In April 1970, McCartney announced the break-up of the
Beatles. His first solo album,
McCartney
contained McCartney's first solo hit,
"Maybe I'm Amazed."
McCartney formed a band, Wings,
which released several albums including
Band on the Run.
Early in 1980, McCartney was arrested upon arriving in
Tokyo, Japan, for marijuana
possession. McCartney spent ten-days in jail.
And, in December of 1980, Paul's former bandmate, John Lennon
was killed.
McCartney remained out of the public eye until 1982 when he released
Tug of War.
which enjoyed great critical acclaim. More albums and two world tours followed.
In 1992, McCartney composed
The Liverpool Oratorio,
a classical work.
In 1995, McCartney's wife,
Linda McCartney, was diagnosed with
breast cancer.
In 1997, McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
In April of 1998, Linda McCartney
died. McCartney stayed out of the public eye for a time, but returned to the studio and released an
album of old rock and roll songs in 1999.
Around the time of the release of
Run Devil Run, McCartney
began dating ex-model
Heather Mills. The couple became
engaged in 2001.
In 2002, McCartney received an
Oscar
nomination for the title song to the film
Vanilla Sky. McCartney and Heather
